How to start? What to do?
1. Communication! Tell staff why RA is an essential -- and fun -- public service and how they can help.
2. Share RA tools and resources with staff. Encourage them to become familiar with online resources, print references, book review journals, and the knowledge/expertise of their colleagues.
3. Staff Picks: have staff list what genres in which they have interest and why.
4. Create title lists w/in genre types to refer customers to. Classic titles within the genre, new authors, favorites and bestsellers are a good start.
5. Be creative, use posters, flyers and bookmarks to promote RA lists.
6. Be smart, everything created in paper form should also be posted online! Use a wiki, website, or blog to post RA info for customers to use after hours or from home.
7. Be effective, start an email listserv to notify customers of new titles or events.
8. Work with staff to create your own Reader's Advisory Toolbox!
